Know Thyself, Searching For “You” By The Way Of Ancestral Self-Discovery
“Know Thyself” is an expression said to date to Ancient Greece. “Know Thyself” has been passed through the centuries as a figure of speech to the present day. This expression holds AT LEAST equal value for each and every individual today as it did for every person in the time of Socrates. Although certain individuals most certainly have better instincts in this respect than do others, to truly know thyself, one must work at it and never quit.
We all possess a past, present and future and to expand upon our insights of our past and present tenses can be of great aid, and serve as a blueprint of sorts in molding our futures to our truest intentions. Expanding upon one’s ancestral sense of self as a work in progress can enrich and focus one’s life manyfold from what it would otherwise be.
A Personal “Know Thyself” Journey
I’ve just recently begun to enlighten myself by the way of ancestral self-research. Although I am still processing the incoming surprises, I’m already engaged and oriented on the subject of “ME” in a fashion that has brought new context and purpose to my life. One major facet of the new data I’m working with which took 31 years of living and participation in National Geographic’s Genographic Project for me to discover is that approximately 14% my ancestry that is Jewish!
Fast-forward to RIGHT NOW and I enjoy a great tasting beer! I have an independent/entrepreneurial streak as I have for most of my life. I absolutely love learning about world history and I especially love my native region of New York City. I’m currently working on a Podcast as the centerpiece of a business venture (a small business consultancy) with my best buddy called The Think In Your Armor in an effort to inspire others with ideas on how to make the world a better place. In conceiving an outro-gimmick for the show, “Keep Your Thinking Caps On” is what I initially came up with.
“Know Thyself” Orienting Benefits
In connection to where I am RIGHT NOW, and where I’M GOING, here’s what the initial genealogical follow-up I’ve conducted solely on the new-found Jewish portion of my background has turned up: (Make sure to refer to the previous paragraph to draw comparisons!) I descend from Bavarian-Jewish Brewers. I descend from Dutch-Jewish Merchants with branches in New York and New Orleans. I descend from Jews that passed through Prague and London and were living on Manhattan Island well before the Civil War began. I descend from the longtime treasurer of The Hebrew Mutual Benefit Society and so much more! I myself am a life-long atheist and according to the number of lapsed and intermarried Jews that appear to have come before me, it may run in the family! My initial Outro-Gimmick, “Keep Your Thinking Caps On” has been adapted to “Keep Your Thinking Kappels On!”. “Kappel” is coincidentally both a Surname from what I believe to be the Jewish portion of my background as well as a synonym for Yarmulke!! My co-host Corv’ and I like this new version WAY better!!
Final Wrap-Up And Takeaways
In conclusion, and in an effort to make this article more than just an exercise in ME ME ME’ing, I encourage everyone to begin their own personal “Know Thyself” searches for all those they descend from and to accordingly connect the dots between their pasts, presents, and futures! Even mundane everyday tasks seem so much more interesting when placed within an ancient, complex, intercontinental context! I also encourage those who love this kind of research and hate their current day jobs to ponder ways to earn livings by helping others find their footings on their personal journeys to ancestral self-discovery. (listen to the podcast embedded in this post for some original proposals on this!) We’re all products of incredible storylines that have been playing out for millennia before we got here. I’d never claim to have squared all the facts of my own storyline as I may turn out to be largely wrong about whatever little I believe myself to know, but I will claim this: MY Search is ON baby and I’m not turning it OFF!!
